When I was preparing the post on the photography blog, I was signing the Credence Clearwater Revival song, "Who'll Stop The Rain." CCR is an East Bay band and the song is thematically appropriate. I did not find a way to work the song or its structure into the post, but it informed my writing. I probably "wondered" a few times, because of the song.
I also mentioned that I photographed when it was wet. Actually, I visited on three different mornings. The first morning it started raining, so I stopped after the first class and returned the next day.
The adult in this photo took the picture of me above. The rain began to affect some of the images. Students enjoyed playing in the rain, but I didn't think their teacher would appreciate it. I didn't have protection for my camera either.
Even after the rain stopped, the yard was still wet and cloudy. "Clouds of mystery pouring confusion on the ground." (CCR) I don't think the students are confused about each other, but I think they are confused about the adults... I am confused when I try to explain to my son the promises of Plessy v Ferguson and Brown v Board. America has not lived up to either promise yet. We don't seem eager to live up to either promise. We have moved to "school choice," even in Oakland.

As I prepare to say goodbye to MLA and OUSD, I am remembering an important anniversary. Fifteen years ago this weekend, I closed escrow on my house and lost my job with the Oakland Unified School District. At the time, I was working as an OUSD elementary school teacher. I was an OEA union rep and I received a confusing certified letter. I had left a higher paying good job to return to teaching. I loved teaching, but it has never worked out for me. Sometimes I wonder if it is because I believe in public education.
