I had planned to write something different about Memorial Day today. Then I planned to write nothing, but I did not want to pretend to ignore the holiday either.
When I visited Washington, D.C. two months ago, I visited the World War II Memorial. I visited many memorial and monuments. I wanted to write about walking in the shadows of memorials.
Then someone shot and killed several people in the small town near where I attended college. Soon there will be memorials for the victims who had not realized they had gone to war. They had just gone to college or gone to visit a friend.
War memorials serve an important role. Memorials help us remember those who served. We remember those who chose to go to war and did not return.
I also visited the Japanese American Memorial... cranes and barbed wire and unusual partriotism. It is important to remember "absolute victory" when loss seems so easy.
