This year we are spending the Christmas / New Year's holidays in Mexico. So that our children would not get sick, my wife scheduled H1N1 flu vaccines the same afternoon as our children's dentist appointments. The two kids and I enjoyed the afternoon, and my daughter Emily laughed more than usual.
We started in Lafayette at our favorite restaurant, Chow. The kids call it "The Muffin Store." When I traveled for work, I stopped there often. Earlier this year, I took Emily several times for breakfast when were visiting the dentist. We ate at the bar and she watched the servers make home made juice. She became friends with one of the servers; we became regulars. And then we stopped going, because Emily started brushing.
We still visit Chow occasionally for a muffin or piece of fruit, but we don't stay long. On Wednesday, we bought snacks and visited, and then went to the dentist for check ups.
After the dentist, we went to Berkeley for our shots.
The last time I took Emily, she was given the mist. She recoiled, and the nurse finished with a shot. This time, something was different. Emily enjoyed going. All the way to the doctors' office, Emily said, "I laugh at shots." I thought she was joking.
Then came the needle, and Emily said it again.
"I laugh at shots." and she did, and she isn't even 6.
Her brother didn't laugh at the mist. Maybe next year when he is old enough for the shot, he will laugh too.
