Something strange happened with my first post. It disappeared. Well, not actually disappeared. But instead of some parents reading a very nice tribute to their daughters, they read the word "false." Technology can be an odd thing.
There was nothing false about my visit to Dixon.
Originally, I started by revealing that my undergraduate degree is in Women's Studies from UCSB. I am also a credentialed teacher with a Masters in Educational Technology (so, I shouldn't create empty blogs, but it happens.) And in addition to being a decent photographer, I am a former coach, official... and a father with a five year old daughter. I was thinking about all of these things when I was photographing the Dixon High Girls Volleyball Team. Of course, I also considered the light, the green walls the speed, and many other details that would bore most readers. However, I was especially impressed by the girls, who will some day become powerful women.
Back to the girls: I grew up playing team sports from the time I was 7. When I played, team sports were mostly a boys activity, and while some people think competition can be negative, team sports teaches valuable life lessons. I could see this with the girls volleyball teams. The girls learn how to lead and how to follow. The girls learn about sacrificing for a greater purpose. The girls learn about success and failure, and they learn how to recover from failure. The girls learn about fairness and playing by the rules. And the girls also choose how to work together. This last lesson is often overlooked, but it might be the most valuable lesson. Societies, communities, and organizations accomplish more when people choose to work together. These girls will be able to succeed more as women, because of the lessons of teamwork.
Below are a few photos that capture teamwork, cooperation, leadership, success, and the joy of working together. There are also three galleries available for parents, friends, and others. Contact me for viewing.

Thanks Jason.
I enjoyed every day I spent with the varsity, JV and Frosh teams. I wish that we had lived closer so that I could have brought my kids around more than once.
All the girls were fantastic. Hope to see you next season.
